Laura Martin, she shares her crushes and discoveries with us for our greatest happiness!

You think the pleasures of snowmobiling are reserved only for the initiated? Just a bunch of fanatics who have their own snowmobiles, their own coordinated outfits and know every inch of the Bas-Saint-Laurent trails? No way!

Ultimate symbol of Quebec genius, the Ski-doo is also for you, who’ve never put your butt on a cold seat or accelerated down a snow-covered slope. Venturing out into the great white spaces for the first time can seem intimidating, even in the anonymity of a full-face helmet. We’ll help you get started with confidence. Get ready… action!

Can anyone drive a snowmobile?

In Quebec, anyone with a valid driver’s license can ride a snowmobile. However, driving a tracked machine is a very different experience from driving a car. So it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the vehicle before going full throttle. Don’t forget that the seemingly peaceful forest can be full of surprises (animals, water holes, stop signs, etc.).

Where can I find a machine?

If none of your friends has a snowmobile hidden away in their garage, you can rent one to give it a try before daring to spend the big bucks. In Bas-Saint-Laurent, several recreational vehicle dealerships offer rental services. Reservations can be made at André Hallé et Fils in Rimouski, and at Jean Morneau stores in Saint-Pascal and Rivière-du-Loup. The minimum daily rental charge is $300.

What should I wear?

Simple: pile on your warmest gear! Even if the temperature seems mild, speed will increase the sensation of cold tenfold. If, by chance, you break a sweat after a few kilometers, you’ll just have to remove layers. Specialized clothing, made from advanced materials, is of course your best choice. However, a good ski suit, worn over breathable underwear, may be enough for a getaway, accompanied by quality boots and mittens. There’s nothing worse than frozen extremities to ruin a trip!

Now, where do I start?

The Bas-Saint-Laurent region has 1800 kilometers of well-groomed trails. By consulting the snowmobile trail map, you can easily find access not too far from your home or dealership. There’s also an application for your cell phone that shows all the snowmobile trails in Quebec (iMotoneige) and their snow conditions. Ideally, carry a hard copy of the map in your pocket, so that you can find your way back even if your cell phone dies of hypothermia.

And don’t forget, even with your adrenalin pumping, to plan your return before nightfall! Another very important point: before venturing onto a federated trail, you must pay your access fees. The sticker can be purchased online from the Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec website, and includes compulsory third-party insurance.

Anything else you need to know before you pull the lever?

Take the time to carefully read the New Snowmobiler’s Guide from the Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec. You’ll find plenty of useful advice.

Last but not least, never go alone, and make sure you let friends and family know about your itinerary. Snowmobiling is a safe pastime, but it does have its dangers.

Enjoy the ride, and see you at the relay!
